Vadur, leader of the Squirrel Mutants.

History:  During the 1960's a U.S. Department of Energy truck transporting radioactive waste blew a tire while traveling on the winding roads of Hwy 198 near Priest Valley, CA.  It was suspected at the time that nuclear activists had attempted to sabotage the vehicle in order to gain prestige for there fledgling organization.  Several thousand gallons of waste with a toothpaste like consistency spilled onto the ground and contaminated a field of Safflower being grown by a local rancher.

Several years went by and in 1969 Ranchers began to notice that cows were disappearing from their herds.  The Monterey County Sheriff's department and the brand inspector were notified.  The rancher's erroneously thought that poachers were behind the problem.  In November of 1969 Professor Furryduring of the University of California at Davis along with his female companion stopped near Hwy 198 and hiked onto some private lands near to where the original spill took place.

After not returning home (over one week later) the couple was reported missing.  The Monterey County Sheriff's department located the vehicle and a search commenced of the surrounding woods.  Remains of the two were soon discovered.   The remains were nearly picked clean of all flesh.  The remains were sent to the Animal Science Department laboratory in Livermore, California to confirm the belief that it was a mountain lion that had killed the pair.  Unfortunately, the analysis determined that the tooth and claw marks belonged to the common California ground squirrel.

Dismissing the findings of the laboratory, the California Department of Fish and Game instituted a search for the offending "mountain lion"  a team of six people including two professional hunters and three DF&G scientists searched the area and made a surprising discovery.  It seems a small group of common ground squirrels had developed aggressive tendencies and were observed overwhelming and dispatching a full grown, adult female deer.  The state studied the phenomena and later contacted the United States Department of Predator Control (USDPC).

The USDPC in conjunction with the Energy Department acted quickly.   In mid 1980 the area was quarantined.  Large electrical fencing was placed around the area to contain the new aggressive strain of ground squirrel.  Aggressive trapping, poisoning, and hunting measures were put into place to curb the rapid population growth of the new strain.  Great efforts were made to keep the public uninformed of the potential problem.  Professional hunter, Jason Orton, was given charge of the project.  As one of the original six DF&G team members it was determined that he was the best able to handle the situation.

In 1993 the Federal Government turned over operation and ownership of the quarantined area to Mr. Orton.  The population of squirrels was again under control and he began to bring cattle back into the area.  Unfortunately things took a turn for the worse in 1996.  Cattle began to go down in greater numbers.   Traditional means of population control were no longer available due to regulations on trapping and poison.  The population began to soar and soon the rest of the animal population was suffering.  The government turned a blind eye to the problem which continued to worsen.  Finally in desperation, Mr. Orton turned to world renowned documentary producer Dustin Raber in one last attempt to gain support for the cause.

December 1998:  A skeptical Dustin Raber and his one man camera crew journeyed to the area to see for himself what was happening.   He was surprised by what he found.  Never in his years of wildlife documentaries had he seen the aggressive, blood thirsty tendencies he now saw.  During the filming of the first documentary both he and his camera man nearly became victims of the squirrels themselves.

There was little or no interest in airing the documentary by anyone.  Eventually PBS agreed to air the video at 2 am in what they told Mr. Raber they considered the "moron" market of Kentucky, Mississippi, and Alabama.   Support began coming in from sponsors almost immediately.

Although support from sponsor began to trickle, in support from the government did not occur.  It took a grass roots effort to get things going.   Mr. Raber began showing his documentary in January 1999 to college students.   Some mocked the documentary.  Others protested what they considered graphic gun violence.  At Los Angeles Chiropractic College many students, seeing the truth in the film, came to the support of the cause.  Many began writing congressmen.  A bill was introduced but was soon tied up in committee.  HB. 2123 would provide several million dollars per year to study and fight the problem caused by the squirrel mutants.  Also nearly a billion dollars of military surplus weaponry would be given to Mr. Orton and his team to fight the problem.  Environmentalist Democrats soon tied the bill up in committee.

Another source of funds developed.  Some of the college students that viewed the film were from the Pacific Rim countries.  Some marveled at the high energy and virility of the effected squirrels.  Soon Mr. Orton was receiving requests from Asian companies for dried squirrel genitalia.  This was ground up and made into virility mixes and protein supplements.

February 1999:  A group of six scientists from the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) broke onto the compound to debunk what they considered the mutant squirrel myth.  They also hoped it would stem the flow of squirrel genitalia to the Pacific Rim nations.  Six went in and only two came out.  Once survivor Lynn Gustoffson is now a resident of the State Mental Hospital in Attascadero, California.  The second scientist soon left PETA and formed the Society for the Prevention of Animal Mutants (SPAM).  This scientist was also the son of a prominent congressman.  While the bill still languished in committee, the Department of Predator Control began funneling money into the project.  SPAM has also raised considerable money in researching ways to destroy the infected squirrel population.  To date they have been one of the greatest supporters of the project to eliminate the infestation of mutant squirrels.

August 1999:  Mr Orton contacted Dustin Raber again to film a second documentary.  Mr. Orton and SPAM's goal was to provide a second film that they hoped would cut loose even more needed funding because the situation at what had come to be called "The Ranch" was deteriorating.  Dustin arrived and was briefed on the situation.

Since the last film the affected squirrels had united around a common leader who SPAM scientists had dubbed Vadur.  This word being derived from Vlad the Impaler who Bram Stoker had based his Dracula novel.  Vlad was a real count who murdered thousands of his enemies and own people in horrible ways.  This squirrel leader united the various squirrel tribes.  Concerted, methodical attacks on human replaced the unorganized, random take downs of cattle.  The squirrels were developing a consciousness not seen before in any animal species.

Today

Media resistance to airing the latest documentary "When Wild Squirrels Attack II" is still rampant.  Due to limited funds only small venues in Southern California and Central California are being used.

News Flash........

Latest News:  9-27-99 SPAM scientists suspect alcoholism may be taking over the squirrel population.  This photo submitted by Joel to SPAM Board Member Dustin Raber shows that many of the infected squirrel population has shifted it's focus when attacking.  Brings a whole new meaning to the movie title "Animal House".  The drunk squirrels seem to be less motivated than their radiation infected counter parts.  The extreme advances in the areas of the squirrel's intelligence seem to be leveling off as well.  Could this be a potential weapon against the oncoming holocaust?  Stay tuned for more information!

2-1-00  SPAM Scientist and Dr. Jason Orton discover Epstein Bar virus strain in the mutant squirrel population.  The virus seems to mainly attack juvenile male squirrels.  The first stage of the virus has resulted in 30% mortality rates among the wild squirrel population.  Dr. Orton and his team are studying the results to possibly formulate a new biological weapon to use against the squirrels.
